The Productive Role of Error in AI-Driven Modeling starts today, with support from the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation. Over the next two years, philosopher Ryan O’Loughlin (Queens College, CUNY) and Matthew Mayernik (NSF National Center for Atmospheric Research) will study how scientists find, diagnose and learn from errors in AI-driven models of the climate and Earth system.

The project will interview scientists at NSF NCAR, LEAP and NASA GISS and hold an interdisciplinary workshop. A call for extended abstracts and speakers is planned for February 2027.
